Advent is a time of preparation. Even our secular culture knows this. Just look at the crowds in the stores this time of year! And they’re all there preparing for Christmas. Sometimes you and I can be critical of what we see as the commercialization of Christmas, but at least everyone’s instinct is correct – something big is coming, and I need to prepare for it!
That’s the purpose of Advent. This season of Advent, that goes largely unnoticed by our secular culture, is the Church’s way of preparing for the true meaning of Christmas – the coming of Jesus! Advent also points us to his second coming, when He will return in glory at the end of time (which, for most people, will be at the end of our lives). So, Advent is the Church’s way of saying – something big is coming, and we need to prepare for it!
