A Recent Letter to Our Parish
As you know, the urgent need to act to solve the emerging climate crisis was barely discussed in our recent presidential election. Now is the time to raise the Catholic moral voice in the public square and call upon our newly elected leaders, and especially President-Elect Trump, to take swift and meaningful action to reduce U.S. carbon emissions that will care for creation and the poor. We are therefore asking all of our supporters in Florida to submit a Letter to the Editor (LTE) to your local paper.
At Catholic Climate Covenant, we were encouraged to see Florida citizens vote for green energy and in support of rooftop solar by defeating Amendment 1 this past Tuesday. This vote in Florida has garnered state-wide and even national media coverage. This is a perfect opportunity to respond to these articles with an LTE that highlights Catholic teaching on care for creation, that urges our fellow citizens and President-Elect Trump not to roll back the progress we have made in the U.S., and that encourages him to honor our international commitments – including those made in Paris last year – to reduce our carbon emissions and transition to renewable energy.
Below, we have provided recently published articles that you could use as a “hook” to respond to, or you might have seen something already in your local paper. You might also consider writing an opinion piece or LTE that asks why—when there is so much at stake—climate change was not even broached as a serious issue in our presidential election.
To make writing and submitting an LTE as easy for you as possible, we have suggested talking points
that you can use to craft your letter. Also, on our website
you will find tools and tips on how to write a powerful and persuasive piece. Of course, if you write and submit an LTE, please be sure to contact us
and let us know.
Finally, it is very important that you: 1) let us know which publication you targeted for your LTE or Op-Ed submission (even if it is not published) and; 2) send us a copy or link if it is published. Doing so ensures that we are able to lift up your voice and encourage others to write LTEs.
Thank you for your advocacy and public witness on behalf of God’s creation and the most vulnerable of our brothers and sisters.
